BeerBoard Report:

for the On Premise (July 17-19)

On-premise sales and draft volume continue to evolve as America’s bars and restaurants reopen. With changes in COVID policies taking place almost daily across the country, we are starting to see shifts in open rate and performance.

In this report, we take a look at the weekend of July 17-19 and compare that to our reviews of June 19-21 and July 3-5.

This review of insights and retail performance is part of an on-going series which tracks the reopening of America’s bars and restaurants.

COVID Reopening Report for the On Premise (July 17-19)

The Open Rate (locations open and pouring beer) continues to grow steadily This past weekend (July 17-19) finds 91% of locations now open and pouring beer, growing from 86% two weeks ago.

The next few weeks will be interesting to track, as states begin to roll back policies and reintroduce restrictions for on-premise dining and alcohol consumption.

The Average Number of Taps has remained steady nationally the past four weeks. Taps continue to be added in states which were a little later to open, including New York (+16.7%), Michigan (+13.3%) and Nevada (+7.7%).

* % Change From Previous compares the current period (July 17-19) against the previous period (July 3-5)

On-premise volume was up over the previous period (as compared to July 3-5) and it was up big. The 4th of July weekend typically sees a dip for bars and restaurants, so it was no surprise to see a surge – but the climb was notable. Nationally, volume was +50%. Texas led the way among states tracked, climbing 71% over the previous period, while every other state was up healthy double-digits.

Rate of Sale continues to trend downward nationally. Following a fall of -6.9% in the last report, it was -5.1% for the most recent period (July 17-19, as compared to July 3-5). After a climb over the July 4th weekend, New York dropped -9.7%, while Michigan was -6.7%. Minnesota led states tracked with a bump up of +8.2%.

Craft continues its boom, checking in this weekend with 34.8% share. It has climbed from 30.4% on the weekend of June 19-21. Domestic saw a slight uptick, growing to 54.9% from 53.6% last period. Import saw a big decline, dropping to 10.3% from 14.0%.

The big news among Styles was Belgian Wit / White Ale overtaking IPA for the #3 position. Wheat / Hefeweizen also jumped back into the Top 5, bumping out Euro Lagers (the two have traded the #5 slot over the past two reporting periods).
